Roman Abbey of Cluny (Ancienne Abbaye) This abbey church was built in the 11th century for the Cluniac order who adhered to the rule of St. Benedict. It was the largest church in the western Christian area until Rome's Saint Peter's Basilica was built. The abbey was closed during the French Revolution, and many of the buildings ruined. What remains is a transept of the 12th-century abbey church, 15th-century abbots' residences, convent buildings from the 1700s, gardens and a showcase of Romanesque artifacts. Address: . Cluny France
